Chapter Fourteen

Since Marcel decided to stay in town for a few extra days following Wynter’s birthday, they got to spend a lot of time together. It didn’t make up for the years that they’d spent apart, but they were off to a good start. Wynter was saddened that the day for her brother to leave had come so quickly. After dropping Marcel off at the airport, Wynter decided to go have a day for herself. Rico and the kids were out doing them and she didn’t want to be home alone. She opted for her home away from home; the mall.

After ten minutes of driving around Green Acres Mall parking lot, Wynter finally found a parking spot. She shut off the engine and sighed a bit of relief before emerging from the car. She hit the lock bottom on her key fob and proceeded toward one of the entrances to the mall. Out of the corner of her eye, Wynter caught a glimpse of what appeared to be Rico's car. Of course, there were a million and one Benzes on the streets of NYC at any giving time, but there was something about that one. Being the inquisitive type, she took a few steps closer toward the Benz. The license plate came into clear view and Wynter knew for a fact it was his. She even spotted the car seats in the back. She didn't think anything of it and figured that since they were at the mall at the same time, they should meet up.

She retrieved her phone from her bag and called Rico as she continued her walk to the entrance.

"Wassup," Rico answered.

It was something about his tone that made Wynter second guess telling him that she was also at Green Acres.

"What you doing? Where my kids?" Wynter questioned.

"We at the mall. Was shopping and shit, cooling. Then Josiah wanted Mc Donald's so we at the food court now," Rico said.

"Oh, okay. I was just calling to see what ya'll was doing. Finish enjoying daddy-kids day," she said before ending the call.

The feeling in the pit of her stomach was screaming at her, telling her that something wasn't right. She knew it wasn't and was on a mission to find out what was going on. As soon as she stepped foot in the mall, her brain set the food court as her destination. What was usually a short ride up on the escalator seemed like the elevator ride in Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. Maybe it was because she was going over in her head the many things that could be going on. None of the possibilities were good.

Wynter stepped off the escalator and scanned the area. The sight before her made her stomach turn and her head throb. There was her man, her kids, and another female sitting and enjoying lunch like a happy little family. The female even had the nerve to be holding one of the twins. To say Wynter was irate would be an understatement.
